How the oil painting effect works

The oil painting effect analyses each region of the image and replaces pixel values with the most common colour within a brush-sized area — simulating how oil paint blends on canvas. The result is a painterly image with visible brushstroke texture and rich, saturated colours.

Landscapes and portraits with bold colour regions work especially well. The "Impasto" setting produces the thickest, most painterly look with visible brushwork. Fine settings preserve more detail from the original photo.

FAQ

Why does oil painting take longer than other effects?
The oil painting algorithm analyses every pixel's neighbourhood to calculate the dominant colour — this is computationally intensive, especially on large images. We automatically resize images above 1200px to keep processing time under 10 seconds. The full-quality result is still excellent at this size.
What resolution is the output?
Images are capped at 1200px on the longest side for processing speed. For most screen and social media uses this is more than sufficient. If you need a larger output for print, contact us about our Pro tier.
