How to convert image format online
Drop your image above, select the output format, and hit Convert. The result appears on the right with a file size comparison. All conversion runs inside your browser — nothing is transmitted to any server. Works offline once the page has loaded.
The quality slider applies to JPG, WebP, and AVIF outputs (which use lossy compression). For PNG output it has no effect — PNG is always lossless. The "strip metadata" toggle removes EXIF data from the output, including GPS location and device information.
JPG vs WebP vs AVIF — which to choose?
Convert to WebP when you're optimising images for a website. WebP files are typically 25–35% smaller than equivalent-quality JPG files and are supported by all modern browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge). This is the most useful conversion for web developers.
Convert to AVIF for the absolute smallest file sizes — AVIF can be 50% smaller than JPG at similar quality. The trade-off is slower encoding and slightly older browser support. Good for next-generation web projects.
Convert to JPG when you need maximum compatibility — for email, messaging apps, older devices, or printing. JPG is universally supported everywhere.
Convert to PNG when you need transparency (logos, icons, UI elements) or pixel-perfect accuracy. PNG is lossless but produces larger files than JPG or WebP for photographs.
FAQ — Format conversion
Does converting JPG to WebP reduce quality?
At quality 80 and above, the difference between a JPG and its WebP equivalent is imperceptible to most people at normal screen sizes. Since WebP achieves this quality at 25–35% smaller file sizes, it is almost always the better choice for web use. Set the quality slider to 85 for a safe balance of quality and size.
Can I convert PNG to JPG without losing the background?
JPG does not support transparency — any transparent pixels in your PNG will be filled with white during conversion. If you need to preserve transparency, convert to WebP or keep the PNG format. If your PNG doesn't have transparency (it's a photo saved as PNG), converting to JPG or WebP is perfectly fine.
Why is my converted file larger than the original?
This can happen when converting from a heavily compressed format to a less compressed one, or when converting from JPG to PNG (which is lossless). It can also happen if your original image was already highly optimised. If you just need a smaller file, use the Compress tool instead of conversion.
Does all major browsers support WebP and AVIF?
WebP is supported by all major browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari (since 2020), and Edge — covering over 97% of global web users. AVIF has slightly lower support at around 90% and is not supported in older Safari versions. For maximum compatibility, use WebP for websites targeting broad audiences.
